Fexyn VPN vs Windscribe

Windscribe has the best honest free tier in the consumer VPN market. Fexyn is paid-only with a different protocol stack. Here is the honest comparison.

Overview

Windscribe started in 2016 in Toronto. It is run by a small technical team, has a transparent track record, and ships clients for every major platform plus router config builders. The 10 GB/month free tier (with email signup) is the most generous honest free option in the consumer VPN market, and the ROBERT system is genuinely useful for blocking ad networks, malware hosts, and tracker domains at the DNS layer. Their public posture tends toward bluntness about limitations rather than marketing certainty.

Fexyn is a younger Wyoming, US LLC, currently in early-access Beta with native Windows and Android apps available. Three protocols including VLESS Reality with Vision flow, 24-hour Vault-issued certificates, and regional pricing across 192 countries. Smaller network than Windscribe (four servers: Frankfurt, Helsinki, Cyprus, Ashburn). No native macOS, iOS, Linux, or router build yet, but those platforms connect today by importing a Fexyn token link into any VLESS-compatible client.

The free tier question

Windscribe's 10 GB/month free tier is one of the most useful freebies in the category. It is not a 7-day trick. It is a genuine ongoing free product with most server locations available, kill switch included, and ROBERT ad/tracker blocking on. For light users — checking email on hotel Wi-Fi, occasional region-shifting — Windscribe free is hard to beat.

Fexyn does not have a free tier. We have a 7-day trial that does not lock up a card, and regional pricing that drops to $2.99/mo in Tier 4 markets, but $0 is $0. If your usage genuinely fits under 10 GB/month, Windscribe is the right answer here.

Protocols and obfuscation

Windscribe ships an unusually wide protocol set: WireGuard, OpenVPN, IKEv2, Stealth (OpenVPN wrapped in stunnel), and WStunnel (OpenVPN tunnelled inside WebSockets). Stealth and WStunnel are explicit obfuscation choices and they work well against simpler filters — they shaped traffic through what looks like ordinary TLS or HTTP-WebSocket traffic on standard ports.

The structural difference between Windscribe Stealth and Fexyn Stealth (VLESS Reality with Vision flow) is what the censor sees. Stunnel produces TLS-shaped traffic. Reality produces a genuine TLS 1.3 handshake to a real public website, then hijacks the connection from the inside. To DPI fingerprinting tooling, Reality looks like Microsoft.com. Stunnel looks like TLS to a Windscribe IP. In Iran, China, and Russia's TSPU regime, that distinction often decides whether the connection holds.

Where Windscribe is better

Several real strengths Fexyn does not currently match:

  • Best free tier in the category. 10 GB/month is genuinely useful, not a teaser.
  • ROBERT. Custom-blocklist DNS filtering with per-account control — domain-level granularity Fexyn does not yet match.
  • Platform breadth. Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, browser extensions, router configs, Fire TV — all as native clients. Fexyn ships native Windows and Android apps today; macOS, iOS, Linux, and routers work via a token link in any VLESS-compatible client rather than a dedicated app.
  • Transparency culture. Windscribe's public communication about a 2021 Ukraine server seizure (no usable data was recovered, even though logs were attempted to be requested) is one of the most useful real-world stress tests of any VPN no-logs claim. Fexyn has not been similarly tested.
  • Build-a-plan pricing. Pay only for the locations you use, from $1/location/month.

Where Fexyn is the better fit

Pick Fexyn over Windscribe if:

  • You connect from a heavy-DPI country (Iran, China, UAE, parts of Russia under TSPU). Reality holds where stunnel increasingly does not.
  • You are in a Tier 3 or Tier 4 market and $2.99/month meaningfully changes the affordability question.
  • You want short-lived 24-hour certificates from a managed PKI as part of your threat model.
  • You want a Wyoming jurisdiction outside the Five Eyes structure some users avoid.

For everyone else — particularly anyone who fits inside the 10 GB/month free tier — Windscribe is a fine pick.

Verdict

Windscribe is the right pick for free-tier users, technical users who want a bigger protocol toolbox, and anyone running VPN on a router. It has earned its reputation honestly.

Fexyn is the right pick when DPI evasion is the deciding factor, or when regional pricing meaningfully changes the math. The 7-day trial is the fastest way to know whether Stealth gets through your specific filter — it does not lock up a card, so testing the fit costs nothing.

Frequently asked questions

Is Windscribe actually free?

Yes. The free tier gives you 10 GB/month with email signup (or 2 GB without), access to most server locations, and the ROBERT ad/tracker blocker. It is one of the few free VPN tiers run as a real product rather than a lead magnet.

What is Windscribe's Stealth mode?

Windscribe's Stealth wraps OpenVPN inside stunnel (TLS). It defeats simpler filters that block UDP or known OpenVPN headers. It does not use the Reality protocol family that mimics a real public TLS site, so deeper DPI in Iran or China can still spot it.

Where does Fexyn beat Windscribe?

DPI evasion in heavy-censorship countries. VLESS Reality with Vision flow performs a genuine TLS 1.3 handshake to a real public website, which is structurally harder for a censor to fingerprint than OpenVPN-over-stunnel. Fexyn also runs regional pricing that drops to $2.99/month in Tier 4 markets.

Where does Windscribe beat Fexyn?

Free tier, server count, platform support, and track record. Windscribe ships on every major platform, has been operating since 2016, and the ROBERT system gives finer-grained ad/tracker blocking than Fexyn currently offers.

Is Windscribe a logging risk because it is Canadian?

Canada is in the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing alliance, which some users treat as a jurisdictional concern. Windscribe operates a no-logs policy and was the subject of a notable 2021 Ukraine server seizure where Ukrainian authorities recovered no usable user data. The episode is one of the more concrete public real-world tests of a VPN's no-logs claim.

Can I run Windscribe on my router?

Yes, with config builder support that has long been one of Windscribe's technical-user wins. Fexyn ships native apps for Windows and Android and does not have a dedicated router build yet, but routers and other platforms work today by importing a Fexyn token link into any VLESS-compatible client (Hiddify, Streisand, v2rayNG, NekoBox).
