Where Discord is blocked
Discord falls into the same blocking patterns as other Western messaging platforms. Two distinct motivations drive blocks: Gulf carriers protect VoIP revenue (UAE, Saudi Arabia), and political regimes restrict communication channels during unrest (China, Iran, periodically Turkey).
- UAE: Discord voice blocked by Etisalat and du under TRA VoIP rules. Text and screen-share work; voice and video calls do not.
- Saudi Arabia: Discord voice blocked by STC, Mobily, and Zain. Same VoIP pattern as the UAE.
- China: Discord fully blocked by the Great Firewall since at least July 2018. IP-level blocks plus DPI against Discord's voice protocols.
- Iran: Discord blocked since the September 2022 protests. Block has held through 2026.
- Turkey: Discord blocked by court order October 2024, lifted in early 2025. BTK retains authority to re-block at any time.
Why standard VPNs often fail
Discord voice runs over UDP with characteristic packet sizes and timing. Most major VPN brands ship WireGuard or OpenVPN with an "obfuscated" mode that wraps the standard protocol in TLS padding. Gulf and Iranian DPI hardware has been pattern-matching that wrapper since 2023. The result: Discord voice connects, then quality collapses or the connection drops. The same pattern UAE expats describe across all VoIP apps.
The technical fix is a protocol whose handshake is structurally indistinguishable from regular HTTPS to a real public site, because that is what it is.

Why is Discord blocked in UAE and Saudi Arabia?
Etisalat and du in the UAE, and STC, Mobily, and Zain in Saudi Arabia, block Discord voice and video calls under the same VoIP-protection rules that block WhatsApp, FaceTime, Skype, and Viber. Discord text chat works; voice and video do not. The motivation is commercial: licensed VoIP services (Botim in UAE, equivalent in Saudi) generate carrier revenue that free competitors would erode. Discord text passes because text does not compete with voice-call revenue.
Why is Discord blocked in China?
Discord has been blocked in mainland China since at least July 2018 by the Great Firewall. The block is content-policy driven; Discord declined to comply with Chinese content-moderation requirements. The GFW operates IP-level blocks against Discord's edge servers and DPI fingerprinting against Discord's voice protocols. There is no licensed Chinese alternative to Discord that the GFW promotes (unlike the Russian or Iranian state-VPN model); Discord is simply unavailable in mainland China without a VPN.
Why is Discord blocked in Iran?
Iran's Filtering Committee added Discord to the blocked list during the September 2022 Mahsa Amini protests and the block has held since. Iran blocks most Western messaging and social platforms (Instagram, Twitter, Signal, WhatsApp partially) for the same reason: government control over communication channels during periods of unrest. Iranian users access Discord via VPN, like most other blocked platforms.
Was Discord blocked in Turkey?
Turkey blocked Discord on October 9, 2024, by court order. The cited reason was Discord's failure to comply with content-moderation requests under Turkish Law No. 5651. The block was lifted in early 2025 after Discord agreed to limited cooperation with Turkish authorities. Status as of May 2026: Discord is generally accessible from Turkish networks but the BTK retains the legal authority to re-block at any time. Does a VPN fix Discord voice in the UAE?
Yes, if the VPN protocol is designed for carriers that deploy DPI. Standard WireGuard and OpenVPN sessions are routinely identified and throttled by Gulf DPI hardware, which means Discord voice tunneled through them gets degraded too.
